‘Communicate better and collaborate more’ sounds easy – takes effort!

A strategic planning meeting between Western Landcare (WLNSW) and Western Local Land Services (WLLS) to foster collaboration, establish role clarity and commit to future shared ways of working was held on the 11th and 12th November 2025.

Capacity building - LEP23-021-22

The issue

The facilitated two, half-day format workshop allowed as many people to attend as possible, taking into account that travel time maybe considerable in the West!

The challenge is for the two organisations to better coordinate our efforts, avoiding duplication, to make the best use of time and funding to deliver positive outcomes for the Western Region.

The solution

The objective was for open, big picture, strategic discussion resulting in an understanding of the collective vision for Western NSW landscapes, agriculture, environment and community.

The shared history of both organisations was highlighted by placing significant events onto a 2000 – 2025 timeline, individuals also contributed personal information about their important life-events.

Thoughts on ‘what is working well’ (Strengths and Opportunities) and ‘what is not working well (Threats and Weaknesses) were recorded on Post-It Notes, once collated they showed many overlaps in our experiences.

Reports of current work and future projects from both groups led to opportunities for increased collaboration.

The impact

‘Putting faces to names’ – identified by almost all participants as a key outcome and important for future alliances.

‘It was important to get to know the history’ – part of understanding the relationship of the organisations.

‘Making connections and feeling connected’ – spending the time to know each other better.

‘Shared goals’ – important that both organisations are heading in the same direction.

An Actions table was developed, including who is responsible for the action and project/program, ensuring we track our evolving partnership.
