Swinging Flood fence
This swinging flood fence is an innovative fencing solution designed by some of our members of the Buckwaroon Landcare group to help with fast flooding issues they were having on the boundary fence of their property. Unlike conventional fencing, the fence is engineered to swing in the direction of water flow during flood events, allowing large volumes of water, debris, and vegetation to pass through without causing structural damage. Under normal conditions, the fence functions as a standard stock-proof boundary, safely containing livestock within the property.

The issue
Traditional farm fencing is often vulnerable during flooding. Fast-moving water and accumulated debris can place significant pressure on fence lines, resulting in posts being uprooted, wires snapping, and extensive repair costs. Damaged fences also create the risk of livestock escaping, leading to animal welfare concerns and additional recovery efforts. The challenge was to develop a fencing system that could withstand flood events while maintaining stock containment and reducing ongoing maintenance requirements.
The solution
The swinging flood fence was designed to automatically respond to rising floodwaters by pivoting with the force of the flow. This movement allows water, logs, branches, and other debris to pass through the fence line rather than becoming trapped and creating destructive pressure. Once floodwaters recede, the fence returns to its original position, continuing to provide a secure barrier for livestock. This solution significantly reduces flood-related fence damage, lowers repair costs, improves farm resilience, and helps prevent stock losses during major weather events.
