Bombay Display Board: Woodland Birds

The text, images and references for the threatened woodland bird species as featured on the Bombay display board at Bombay Reserve.

Diamond firetail (Stagonopleura guttata)

A native finch that feeds on grass seeds. Found in high quality native grasslands and woodland habitats with abundant native grasses and forbs.

Scarlet robin (Petroica boodang)

Migrates to the southern tablelands and coast in autumn and winter. Feeds in woodlands with mixed shrubs and open grassy areas with fallen timber.

Glossy Black Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus lathami)

A seasonal migrant that moves from higher altitudes to the area in the cooler months, before moving back to tall forests for breeding in trees with large hollows.

Glossy Black Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus lathami)

Feeds solely on the seeds of she-oaks. Nests in large hollows of old eucalypt trees in woodlands and forests.

Flame robin (Petroica phoenicea)

Very similar to the scarlet robin in habitat needs and seasonal movements. Often seen in open pastures and on fences, where they pounce on ground dwelling insects.

Hooded robin (Melanodryas cucullata cucullata)

Very rare now in southeast NSW, this robin needs large areas of woodland with open grassy areas and plentiful fallen timber for foraging.

Speckled warbler (Chthonicola sagittata)

Feeds mostly on the ground for insects and seeds in woodlands with very dense and prickly shrubs like blackthorn (Bursaria spinosa).

Brown treecreeper (Climacteris picumnus victoriae)

Not to be confused with the more common white-throated treecreeper, this species is now rare. Requires large, well-connected patches of open grassy woodland with abundant fallen timber for foraging.
