Rejuvenating local Landcare for future generations.
Back from the dead: the rejuvenation of Mogriguy Creek Landcare.
Capacity building - LEP23 - 005_RLC
The issue
A local landholder from Mogriguy contacted the Central West Regional Landcare Coordinator for advice on rejuvenating their local Landcare group.
The group had been dormant for a number of years, with none of the past committee members wanting to continue volunteering with the group.
Katja Williams was keen to rejuvenate the group in order to start carrying out a range of Junior Landcare projects that would involve local youth in Landcare activities, but she didn't know where to start.
The solution
Central West Regional Landcare Coordinator, Danielle Littlewood assisted the group to get back into working order.
This involved:
- researching the past history of the group (digging back through a treasure trove of old boxes!)
- identifying areas of outstanding governance that needed addressing
- setting a date for an AGM and inviting the local community to get involved
- re-electing a committee and identifying project ideas/needs to work on
- providing advice and support for the group to update their governance structures so they can get their hands dirty!
The impact
Mogriguy Creek Landcare is back!
While the process of ticking all the governance boxes is moving slowly along, the group has partnered with Mid Macquarie Landcare, to progress some projects and activities.
In Term 2 (2026) Mogriguy Creek Junior Landcarers will officially become Nature Spotters as part of the popular Mid Macquarie Landcare youth enviroscience program. Designed to provide an off-screen engaging experience for kids and teens, the Mogriguy Junior Landcarers will explore a different topic each week from native reptiles and turtles to tree planting and waterbugs.
Learnings
Working through the processes with Fair Trading, Service NSW and ATO and any banking institutions is no mean feat!
Having clear advice on the details required for each stage of the process, and a support structure of other volunteers and coordinators to follow up requests and submissions is important for success!
