The issue
Our aim for the day was to support our local community by providing a high quality horsemanship clinic in a supportive environment that also provided opportunities to break down the stigma and social judgement of mental health issues in rural and regional communities.
The solution
Coonamble Castlereagh Landcare partnered with well-known Campdraft and Horsemanship clinicians Neil Faint and Amanda Nicholson from Texas Star Performance Horses to deliver a hands on intense learning clinic that focussed on general horsemanship skills, dry work campdraft patters and use of the mechanical cow.
Representatives from RAMHP and The Rural Financial Counselling Service were a key inclusion of the day, providing information on support services for mental health and wellbeing in a comfortable and low key environment.
The impact
Participants grew their Horsemanship and Low Stress Stock Handling skills through the delivery of the clinic. It was wonderful to see riders grow and build their horsemanship skills, make new connections within the campdraft and equestrian industry. These skills can now be applied to their own rural enterprises and personal interests. A casual but impactful chat around mental health and wellbeing with Gabby Shultz from RAMHP allowed participants to learn about local mental health services and share personal experiences in a supportive environment.
