Tootool - Great Southern Bioblitz
Locals of the Tootool and Milbrolong area joined in discovering the Tootool Wetlands as part of the Great Southern Bioblitz 2025 - Murrumbidgee
A day to celebrate our beautiful landscapes in the Riverina with Eastern Riverina Landcare.
What a great turnout. We had citizen scientists of all ages. All enjoying the Tootool Wetlands on Bullenbung Creek.
It was wonderful to have members of the Milbrolong and District Landcare Group come along and show us some of the work they did years ago to protect Crown Land from eroding. Now there is a wonderful wetland that shelters loads of birdlife, reptiles and flora.
Chocolate lilies, Eutaxia, Bindweed and Nardoo were some of the plants we saw. The bird list included a Dollar bird, Kingfisher and Tawny Frogmouth. Not to be forgotten were the mussels we saw along the creek bed.
Don’t underestimate the work and impact a Landcare group can have.
We had loads of expertise on the job. Darcy from Birdlife Australia, Janet with her lizards was a hit with the kids and Tina a great help identifying plants for us.
Having so many pairs of eyes was a blessing. Carmel and the kids spotted a Tawny Frogmouth with a young chick. A great find.
Keep your eyes open in future as you walk through wetlands. They are fascinating.
A real treat on the way home was to visit the Tootool roadside rest area. Charming place with exceptional facilities. Thanks to all the locals who look after it.
