Using Google Analytics to Improve Greater Sydney Landcare's Website

How data-driven insights from Google Analytics helped improve website performance, user experience and engagement.

Capacity building

The issue

As a membership-based organisation, Greater Sydney Landcare relies on its website to connect volunteers, community groups, partners and supporters with programs, events and resources. However, despite investing significant time in website content and promotion, there was limited visibility over how users were interacting with the website. Without reliable data, decisions about website design, content placement and user journeys were often based on assumptions rather than evidence. This created a risk that website visitors could struggle to find important information, resulting in missed opportunities for volunteer participation, event registrations and community engagement.

The solution

Google Analytics was implemented as a core tool to better understand website performance and user behaviour. Data was used to analyse which pages attracted the most visitors, how users navigated through the website, where they dropped off, which devices they used and which channels drove traffic. These insights informed a range of improvements, including restructuring navigation menus, simplifying key user journeys, improving page layouts, optimising content for search engines and increasing the visibility of high-priority actions such as event registrations, volunteering opportunities and program information. Regular reporting dashboards were also developed to monitor trends and support ongoing decision-making.

The impact

Using Google Analytics transformed website management from a reactive process into a proactive, evidence-based practice. By understanding how visitors engaged with content, Greater Sydney Landcare was able to prioritise website improvements that delivered the greatest benefit to users. Enhanced navigation and decluttered content improved the user experience, making it easier for volunteers, partners and community members to find relevant information and participate in programs.

The data also provided valuable insights into audience behaviour and communication effectiveness. Analytics revealed which marketing campaigns and communication channels generated the strongest engagement, allowing resources to be focused on the most effective activities. Website performance reporting provided tangible evidence of audience reach and engagemen. Importantly, the adoption of a data-driven approach established a culture of continuous improvement, ensuring that the website could evolve in response to changing user needs and organisational priorities.
