The issue

Many Landcare groups in the Hunter have expressed interest in securing funding to carry out on-ground works, on a greater scale than what is typically available through the local council.  Many Landcarers have never done this before and aren't familiar with the process or what grants are available.  Some expert advice and encouragement to make these projects a reality was identified by the Local Landcare Coordinator as a real need.

The solution

Hunter Region Landcare Network through the Local Landcare Coordinator Initiative was able to organise two grant writing workshops- one for the Lower Hunter and one for the Mid-Hunter region. The workshop presenter brought extensive knowledge in environmental grant writing and project delivery across stakeholder groups to the table. The key topic was Project Planning- Taking an idea and breaking it down into objectives, targets and activities.  This was done for some of the participants projects through Facilitated discussions and small group break- outs. Project partnerships and collaboration were discussed along with budgeting and project management considerations. Participants were taken through the key parts of an Environmental Trust application to demonstrate how to apply what was learned.

The impact

Twenty Landcarers in the Lower Hunter came to the training workshop eager to learn about sourcing funding for their projects. To start off, participants introduced themselves to eachother and each told their Landcare story. Examples of opportunities and resources in the Landcare context were shared along with learnings from the past and insights into the future. Particpants walked away with strategies to make their next project grant-ready. Feeback included "Marguerite was great at including everyone and encouraging new connections among the participants; Going through the steps of a sample grant application outlined crucial tips to cover; Great workshop!; Extremely organized; Absolutely Worthwhile"
