The issue
The Junee Shire is home to a diverse range of native plant and tree species, however, many residents are unaware of the ecological value and local significance of the vegetation around them. This lack of awareness makes it harder to encourage native plant use in gardens and community projects, and limited appreciation of the natural environment within the shire.
The solution
A passionate Landcare member took the initiative to develop Local Focus, a series of one-page information sheets, each featuring a local native plant species. Each sheet provides photos, identification details, habitat information, and practical notes on the plant’s ecological role and use in local revegetation. The spotlight series makes it easy for anyone to learn about and recognise the native plants that shape the Junee landscape, and provides advice on where these species can be sourced for local planting projects.
The impact
The Local Focus series has increased community knowledge and appreciation of native vegetation. The sheets have been shared locally through the Junee Regenerative Landcare Facebook page, website, displays, and events, providing an accessible educational resource for schools, gardeners, and Landcare volunteers. By highlighting the beauty and importance of local flora, the project is helping build stronger connections between the community and the local environment one species at a time. The series is still growing, with around ten spotlight sheets completed so far and more planned in the future.
