Celebrating birds on farms through the lens
Little River Landcare supporting Mid Macquarie Landcare in Showcasing local bird biodiversity on farms and engaging the community through photography.
Capacity building - LEP23_037_LLC
The issue
Participants often faced challenges capturing clear and compelling photographs of birds due to their unpredictable behaviour, rapid movements, and the technical demands of using camera equipment in natural environments. There was also an opportunity to further strengthen knowledge of ethical practices that minimise disturbance to wildlife. In addition, awareness of vulnerable and threatened bird species on local farms could be increased, alongside opportunities to strengthen community connection around bird conservation.
The solution
Supported By Little River Landcare, the Mid Macquarie Landcare team delivered a bird photography workshop that provided hands-on field training, alongside expert guidance on camera settings, techniques for tracking and anticipating bird behaviour, and ethical approaches to wildlife photography. Participants were also supported to develop species identification skills, with a focus on recognizing local and vulnerable bird species on farms. Guidance also included composing images using natural backgrounds, helping to create more authentic and visually compelling photographs while avoiding distracting man-made elements.
The impact
Participants improved their technical skills and confidence in photographing birds, capturing higher-quality images and applying techniques such as using natural backgrounds to create more compelling compositions. Their ability to identify local and vulnerable bird species increased, fostering a deeper understanding of regional biodiversity and awareness of threatened species on local farms. The workshop promoted ethical wildlife practices and strengthened participants’ sense of responsibility for protecting habitats. Connections with local stakeholders enhanced community engagement, and participants were invited to submit their photos for the creation of a 2027 Landcare Calendar, celebrating local biodiversity and supporting ongoing Landcare initiatives.
This workshop is a part of the shared Project BBBB between Mid Macquarie Landcare and Little River Landcare. Project BBBB is proudly funded by EnergyCo’s Community and Employment Benefit Program.
