Designing Effective Restoration for Woodland Bird Conservation
Bringing together Landcare coordinators and NRM professionals to demonstrate how science-based restoration approaches can be applied to create connected, high-quality habitat for woodland birds.

The issue
While restoration is widely recognised as essential, a gap often exists between ecological science and on-ground implementation. Landcare coordinators and NRM professionals play a key role in delivering restoration projects but may lack access to up-to-date, science-based best practice for creating connected, high-quality habitat at landscape scales. The Better Bush for Birds workshop, delivered by ANU Sustainable Farms, addresses this gap by building capacity in evidence-based restoration planning to improve fragmented woodland habitat for bird conservation in agricultural landscapes.
The solution
The impact
The workshop strengthened practitioners’ ability to apply restoration principles in real-world projects, supporting more strategic habitat restoration across agricultural landscapes. Participants gained practical tools to design connected plantings, prioritise bird hotspots and water sources, and improve habitat quality and connectivity. It also strengthened relationships and networking among organisations, enhancing collaboration across the region. Over time, these gains in planning, implementation, and partnership are expected to improve habitat outcomes, increase connectivity, and benefit woodland bird populations, including threatened species in fragmented agricultural environments.
Learnings
Participants improved their understanding of how ecological knowledge informs practical restoration decisions. A key insight was the importance of midstory planting in improving habitat structure for woodland birds, providing shelter and reducing dominance by aggressive species such as noisy miners. The workshop also highlighted the value of locally sourced native tubestock in supporting ecological integrity and site suitability. Together, these elements support more effective woodland bird restoration outcomes.
