Indian Mynas, also called Common Mynas are ranked in the top 100 most invasive species globally by the World Conservation Union. In rural settings, Indian Mynas inhabit cleared agricultural areas where they contaminate stock feed and water supplies with their droppings and destroy crops.
This pest species is highly aggressive and territorial, out competing native wildlife, such as parrots, possums and sugar gliders for food, habitat and hollows for nesting. Indian Mynas also spread diseases and parasites which impact both domestic and wildlife species
Populations of Indian Mynas can ballon very rapidly once they reach a new area due to the speed and rate of reproduction.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
1. Report new populations
MynaScan is a resource developed to help community members, pest controllers and biosecurity groups to map sightings and the damage that myna birds cause, and coordinate control efforts with local community groups.
MynaScan is free and easy to use, and helps our Landcare group target trapping control programs.

Backyard Indian Myna traps (peegee traps) are available for Mid Macquarie Landcare members to loan or you can purchase them for $70.
Larger aviary traps are also available for Mid Macquarie Landcare members to host on properties within Wellington and Montefiores.

TRAPPING TIPS FOR BEGINNERS:
Increase your success of trapping these lil peskies by:
- baiting traps with cat/dog biscuits or chicken feed,
- adding the colour red,
- using fake decoy bird or
- keep a caller bird in your trap once one has been captured to attract their mates to join in!
NB: caller birds need to be treated ethically - a good supply of food and water and shelter.
