Establishing a culturally safe and coordinated Aboriginal partnership framework across the North West region of New South Wales.

This case study explores funding to build a culturally safe Aboriginal partnership framework in North West NSW. It prioritises Aboriginal-led co-design, strengthens cultural governance, and builds organisational capability. The initiative aims to support meaningful participation, foster collaboration, and deliver inclusive, culturally responsive, and sustainable outcomes across the region.

The issue

Aboriginal communities across the North West region of New South Wales often face fragmented engagement processes and limited culturally safe frameworks for partnership with organisations. This can result in inconsistent consultation, reduced trust, and missed opportunities for meaningful Aboriginal leadership in decision-making. Organisations may also lack the cultural capability needed to effectively collaborate, leading to approaches that do not fully reflect community knowledge, priorities, or connection to Country. As a result, participation in environmental, educational, and on-Country activities can be limited or not culturally appropriate. This project addresses these gaps by establishing a coordinated, culturally grounded partnership framework.

The solution

This project aims to address these challenges by developing a structured, region-wide approach that centres Aboriginal voices in planning and delivery. It will establish clear partnership pathways, strengthen trust through consistent engagement, and support shared decision-making grounded in cultural knowledge. By investing in capability development, organisations will be better prepared to engage respectfully and effectively. The project will also create practical opportunities for communities to shape and participate in activities that matter to them. Together, these actions are intended to foster stronger relationships, improve collaboration, and ensure initiatives are more culturally appropriate, responsive, and aligned with community priorities.

 

The impact

This project supports equitable, respectful partnerships with Aboriginal communities, improving long-term outcomes. By prioritising cultural governance and community input, it ensures programs reflect local values and knowledge. It builds trust, strengthens engagement, enhances sustainability, reduces cultural risks, and promotes Aboriginal leadership, participation, and meaningful connections to Country.
