Building Landcare connections through nature and wellbeing

To build connection with nature and the outdoors locally, opportunities need to exist. Through a series of inclusive, nature-based Landcare workshops, new participants were introduced to simple and accessible ways of engaging with their environment. Berrigan Government Tank Paddock was also highlighted as a shared community space with ecological and social values.

The issue

The challenge was to create opportunities for community wellbeing through nature-based outdoor activities. A series of workshops were developed which were accessible, inclusive and free to attend. Berrigan Government Tank Paddock was identified as an ideal place as it supports biodiversity and social values.

The solution

Growing Together, sponsored by Murray Irrigation, was an initiative delivered as a series of three outdoor, nature-based workshops. They were designed to engage a diverse audience and foster strong connections with the local environment.

The March Wellness Muster events included:

1. Nature journalling workshop - Berrigan Government Tank Paddock

2. Yoga and meditation - Apex Park, Berrigan

3. iNaturalist workshop - Introducing digital biodiversity recording

Each workshop encouraged participants to slow down, observe their surroundings and engage with nature. The approach emphasised being present, developing observational skills and participating without expectation or pressure of perfection.

All events were intentionally held outdoors to immerse participants in nature.

The impact

The workshop series broadened engagement with Landcare by attracting participants from varied backgrounds and interests. Each activity drew a different segment of the community, demonstrating the value of different entry points into environmental participation.

The workshops strengthened social connections by bringing together people who may not typically engage with Landcare, including visitors, creatives, landholders and community. Importantly, the initiative reinforced the Tank Paddock as a valued local community asset.
