The issue
A big challenge for Landcare is keeping people engaged while also bringing new faces through the door. It’s easy to end up talking to the same group, but harder to reach people outside the network—especially urban residents or those working full-time. Mid-week evening events can be hit and miss for numbers, and not every topic connects with a broader audience. There was also a need to make sure sessions felt relevant and community-led, not top-down. Finding a simple, reliable way to bring people together regularly, in a way that worked for different lifestyles, was something we needed to get right.
The solution
The Landcare Learnings model is a simple, consistent approach—one session every two months, same place, same time (6pm), different topic each time. It’s designed to be easy to plan and easy to attend. Topics often come straight from members, which keeps things relevant and grounded. Sessions might include a guest speaker, a film, or a practical discussion, followed by time to chat and connect. The timing means farmers, retirees, and people working in town can all make it along. Over time, it’s created a rhythm people recognise, with a core group attending regularly and new people joining depending on the topic.
The impact
These sessions have become a great way to bring people together and spark ideas. We’re seeing a mix of familiar faces and new attendees, including people who wouldn’t normally come to a Landcare event. Conversations don’t just stop at the end of the session—there’s real connection and sharing happening in the room. Even when numbers are smaller, the engagement is strong, and people leave feeling inspired and more connected. It’s also helped link people into other local groups and activities. Overall, it’s building a stronger, more connected community around Landcare and sustainable living.
Learnings
Keeping things consistent has been key—same time, same place makes it easier for people to build it into their routine. Evening sessions can limit numbers, but they also open the door for working people, so it’s a worthwhile trade-off. One big learning is that promotion needs to go wider than the usual channels, especially when trying something a bit different. Letting members help shape the topics really works—it creates interest and a sense of ownership. There’s also a clear appetite for going deeper, so follow-up events and building on momentum is something we’ll keep focusing on.
