What to do before the March Tubestock Round Up:
-
Label - Check all your boxes and plant species are correctly labelled, with no tags missing. If you have extra trays of plants, you might need to improvise and create some temporary labels.
-
Trim - Snip-back your plants to one stem per pot. Lift plants to check if the root system has grown through the bottom of the pot. If there are long roots coming out, please prune these off too.
-
Sort - Please sort your seedlings by grouping the same species together. Healthy tubestock can be put to one side of the tray. Sick, dead or empty pots can be put to the other side, and any soil discarded in your compost.
-
Weed - Last chance to pull out any other plants along for the ride.
-
Feed (optional) - Given it's now late summer, your seedlings could have one feed of liquid fertilizer. Seaweed supplements may be used to promote root growth and nutrient absorption, but this step isn't essential.
-
Clean - Your boxes may be dirty, full of potting mix, leaves etc. Lifting trays and giving boxes a general hose down before being returned would be most helpful.
-
Check - Before transporting tubestock, please check and remove any wildlife or pests from the boxes such as frogs, slugs and snails.
