The issue
Mixed farming systems face growing pressures from climate variability, rising input costs and declining soil function. While many farmers are interested in improving soil biology and resilience, adopting new approaches can feel risky without practical, locally relevant examples. Farmers often learn best from each other, making opportunities to observe trials, ask questions and share experiences critical to supporting confidence and informed decision-making.
The solution
Ashley and Sheena Paech, supported by West Hume Landcare, established a 16-hectare biological farming trial at 'Walla Park' to test practices that improve soil biology and farm resilience. The trial compares mixed-species cover crops and monoculture barley, alongside treatments including MAP fertiliser, biological stimulants and nil input. Farmer-led field days allow producers to explore results firsthand, discuss lessons and contribute ideas for future trial design.
The impact
The project has created valuable opportunities for peer-to-peer learning, helping farmers explore biological farming practices under local conditions. Field days encourage open discussion about what works, what doesn’t and how practices may apply to different farming systems. Sharing results builds confidence, strengthens local networks and supports informed decisions about improving soil function, productivity and profitability.
