Paddock to Plate: Biodiversity in Farming

The issue
The main goal of the day was to share hands on information about incorporating biodiversity into traditional farming methods and highlighting the benefits to this approach. Our aim was to support Hayley Patterson from Pattison Pastoral to tell their story, the journey, the reasoning and the trials of managing a working farm for biodiversity and how this can complement a functional production system.
The solution
The event brought together 39 participants and five speakers in a relaxed farm setting beside the dam/wetland at Pattison Pastoral. Participants explored how productive farming and environmental stewardship can work together, with practical examples of biodiversity management, ecosystem health and genetic diversity. A BBQ lunch featuring host-farm produce added to the experience. The day highlighted long-term biodiversity management in action and supported landholders to consider conservation as part of a viable farming enterprise.
The impact
- Participants were able to visit and view positive farm management practices
- Local landholders were introduced to BCT Agreements and upcoming On-farm Carbon projects.
- NSW LLS were able to connect to local landholders and provide a range of resourses.
- WMLIG worked closely with a new generation of innovative and progressive farmers showcasing our region and its produce.
- The day provided a social opportunity for increased social connection within the local community.
- ReGen Farming and Biochar discussions provided alternative fertiliser options for challenging financial times.
- Feedback collected will guide WMLIG in developing field days based on identified topics of interest.
