Reading the Land @ Berry: Saturday 9 August - 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM

Reading the Land @ Berry is an opportunity for 'artists' to examine and learn about a landscape. They will learn from and with people who know that landscape well: an ecologist, a Koorie artist and an historian. The challenge then is to interpret that in their art. As they see it. Reading the Land is for artists of all levels and all forms – visual, performing, musical, literary. The theme for Reading the Land is: CONNECTIONS This supports physical connections being made through landscape management between the coast and the escarpment. And it speaks to spiritual connections people feel to a landscape. Saturday 9 August, 9.00am – 2.30pm After convening at the Berry Sport and Recreation Centre on Coolangatta Rd participants will visit three sites in the local area. Car pooling will be required, before returning to Sport and Rec for lunch, conversation and art. There is no charge for this event; morning tea and lunch are provided. An exhibition of art from Reading the Land will be at: Silos Estate on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September. The Great Lakes Council (GLC) has organised a dune stabilisation and planting day at Hawks Nest.

Working Bees

Working bees are held every Wednesday from February to December. In the summer months start times are 8.00 am and finish times are 10.00 am. These change to 8.30 am to 10.30 am for the remainder of the year.

An Bird Watching for Beginners in the Field of Mars Wildlife Refuge

The Field of Mars Wildlife Refuge is Ryde’s largest bushland remnant and home to over 100 species of birds. It is a 50 hectare “island of bush” within the Gladesville/East Ryde area, popular with local bushwalkers and bird watchers. The guided walk and afternoon tea “question time” will provide an introduction to bird watching and the bird habitats of the Field of Mars Reserve. The walk will be of approximately 1.5 hours duration, commencing at 2.30pm. Afternoon tea will follow, where experienced bird watchers will be available to explain more about bird watching and answer any questions. Whilst winter is not the best time to observe birds, this introduction is aimed to provide the basic skills for some spring “twitching”! Bookings (adults only) will be essential for this event, commencing and concluding at the Field of Mars Visitors Centre. Car parking is at the Pittwater Rd entrance. Best pedestrian access is via Pittwater Rd, Kennedy St or Westminster Rd. Bus route 506 to Thompson St and walk via Kennedy St. Please ensure you have closed shoes, water and warm clothes, also binoculars if you have them (some binoculars will be available on the day).
