Revisiting the state-wide gathering of Landcare Coordinators across NSW

Building our Future -

LLCI012-013

The issue

As coordinators, we operate across our regional areas often in isolation from our rural, coastal and western colleagues. Rarely do we get a chance to meet, network, swap ideas and stories – as well as learn from each other. There are also limited opportunities for training, learning and planning together.

The state-wide LLCI Gathering is held every two years around the State. This year, at the Australian Centre for Indigenous Excellence, Redfern, the gathering brought together coordinators across the state to come together, share, collaborate and learn, and meet the face behind the NSW Landcare team.

The solution

Held over three days, 120 coordinators from around the state – representing 60 full-time positions – gathered for a conference of updates, dynamic training sessions and workshops to scope out the next iteration of the LLCI program.

Throughout the workshop, our communications coordinator Clare blogged, Instagrammed and posted along the way – and picked up several shares reaching more than 1500 people recalling the inspiring talk by Bruce Pascoe.

Highlights of the conference included:

  • Bruce Pascoe

… together with some exceptional workshops covering governance, finance, social media and project management.

The impact

  • Cross-regional connections
  • Cross-tenure networking
  • with the potential of an OzFish and Rivers of Carbon program later in the year along the Hawkesbury-Nepean – a direct result of the trade displays at the conference
  • Enhanced coordinator understanding of the rural-urban divide, and just how different Landcare in urban Sydney compares to our regional cousins.
  • Appreciation for the challenges faced by our rural colleagues

Learnings

  • Landcare is diverse!
  • We achieve incredible outcomes with limited time, money and resources
  • Landcare is a vital part of the environment, farming landscapes, and most importantly: the community
