Come along and learn all about bush tucker and local shorebirds as part of the latest free environmental event run by Lake Macquarie Landcare. The hands-on workshop at Osmond Reserve in Swansea will be held on Saturday 18 June and will introduce participants to the large range of bush foods and traditional medicines found in our local bushland environments. Local Landcarers, Garry Stewart and Don Roach, will lead a tour around the beautiful foreshore site, identifying and demonstrating the many uses of bush tucker plants, with samples of native jams available to taste. Lake Macquarie City Council’s Ecosystems Project Officer, Mandy McDonald, will also be present to talk about monthly shorebird surveys in the region. Lunch is provided for all participants. The workshop is part of the Super Saturday Sessions; a series of free monthly environmental workshops hosted by Lake Macquarie Landcare.

It's time to put your soils knowledge to the test.. Competition day has arrived in the Upper Lachlan Regional Soils Skills competition. This is your chance to put your soils knowledge to the test and compete for some great prizes and potentially represent the region in future soils competitions around Australia. The competition is based on a fundamental set of soil skills common to all farmers. The aim is to help you gain more skills in understanding and managing your soil. At the same time it provides a chance to share soils knowledge with other farmers right across the district. All while having fun! This is a fun competition day. It is not necessary to have attended previous days. Participants will gain skills in assessing soil type and soil health as well as dealing with soil constraints. The day is open for everyone, even those who are not ready to compete, it will still be a great opportunity to learn something new about soil. For those who have not attended previous days take a look at the Landcare RASH manual which can be downloaded here: LANDCARE RASH MANUAL NB: it is a large file so please contact us if you are unable to download and we will send you a copy. The competition is open to everyone, all ages, we already have participants ranging from 12-79 (or thereabouts..we wont ask you your age) and it is going to be fun so bring some fellow soil enthusiasts and celebrate this most important resource that we all rely on so much. Now for the important details: When: Friday 17thJune 9am to 12.45pm Where: Breadalbane Hall (Collector Rd, Breadalbane) Lunch and morning tea provided RSVP to Ruth Aveyard for catering coordinator@upperlachlanlandcare.org.au Phone: 0447 242 474
