Art and Photography Workshops Inspire the West's Life and Light Photography Competition
Capacity building
The issue
The Life and Light Photography is a 20 year competition in the Western District of NSW. It captures the spirit of the western district through droughts, floods, people, machinery, and stunning landscapes. It has built a rich visual history and remains popular with photographers and art lovers alike.
One challenge has been keeping the competition relevant. While it has always focused on amateur photography, the rise of smartphones has changed how people capture and share moments. Embracing this shift meant recognising that smartphone users are also photographers—opening the door to new participants while keeping the competition inclusive and engaging.
The solution
The impact
Participants reported a stronger connection to the environment and a desire to keep learning about nature, photography, and their local landscapes. The workshops encouraged people to slow down, observe closely, and better understand the natural features they were capturing. Through guidance on positioning, lighting, and techniques like the ‘rule of thirds,’ participants developed skills that helped them tell more meaningful environmental stories. This deeper awareness fostered appreciation and respect for the local ecosystem, highlighting the value of observing and protecting the landscapes that inspire their photography.
