Supporting Local Culture – Bush Tucka Time!
Engaging Local First Nations Tour Group to Cater for Landcare Event
Capacity building - Ref LEP23-021-13
The issue
Western Landcare hosts many community events that include catering. For the inaugural conservation camp, we wanted to source catering that supported local Aboriginal business and showcased native Australian bush foods. Our aim was to connect participants with the local environment and culture through food, helping build appreciation for the region’s biodiversity and traditional knowledge.
The solution
Wontanella Tours, a Barkindji-owned business, was engaged for full catering and a bush tucker walk. They offer immersive cultural experiences using local flora for food and medicine. Western Landcare approached them to cater the Kinchega National Park event. Their team provided meals using native ingredients, while also educating attendees about traditional plant use through a guided walk, enriching the weekend's activities.
The impact
The event successfully supported a local First Nations business and educated over 50 attendees about bush foods and Barkindji culture. Participants reported increased understanding of local ecology and traditional practices. This partnership fostered cultural respect, encouraged local collaboration, and promoted sustainable use of native plants.
