Community Planting Day
A collaborative urban tree planting project restoring the Boorowa River and bringing together community
Capacity building - LEP23 - 014_LLC01_4
The issue
The health of our waterways is constantly under threat from various daily activities within urban areas and on farms. The health of the Boorowa River has been in decline, causes mainly stemming from Salinity, erosion and vegetation clearing.
The solution
The Boorowa Community Landcare Group teamed up with the amazing teams from Rivers of Carbon, Hilltops council and Birdlife Australia to organise a planting day on the Boorowa River right in the heart of Boorowa and its scenic river walk. The day featured educational talks on Landcare, birds, water bugs, platypus and rakali, and the effects of poor water quality in the river systems and their effects on our native fauna. Following these talks, we then got our hands dirty and planted a selection of native trees and shrubs along the river walk, focusing on re-vegetating the area, stabilising the banks of the river and providing new habitats for our native fauna.
The impact
The planting day was a huge success. Not only did we improve such an under vegetated section of river, but we bought our community together to share knowledge and talk about the problems and solutions. The location of the planting been on a main walking/bike track has meant our planting has reached all members of our community. We are had many requests from our locals to do further plantings along the river as they can already see the positive change for the river health and biodiversity of our flora and fauna in the town.
