The issue

An increase in natural disasters, changes in climatic conditions have had a massive impact on farmers and their businesses.

In this everchanging landscape farmers are having to re-evaluate their businesses and look for solutions to better prepare themselves for the future.

The solution

Landcare NSW's People Led Prevention project empowers communities across regional NSW in developing disaster resilience and preparedness skills. The Disaster Risk Reduction Fund is jointly funded by the Australian and NSW Governments. Highlights of what was offered at each workshop include:

  • Insights into Climate Services for Agriculture (CSA): Sarah Clancy and Ashley Harkin provided insights into the CSA project, a collaborative effort involving the Bureau of Meteorology, CSIRO, and FarmLink. This initiative aids farmers in recognising climate trends and conditions impacting on-farm operations.
  • Psychological Preparation for Emergencies: Judy Carmody of the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program (RAMHP) discussed psychological preparation for emergencies, providing valuable insights into understanding the mind-body connection, developing personalised psychological preparedness plans, and creating recovery and rebuilding strategies.
  • Natural Capital Data Collection: Danny O’Brien led a session on natural capital data collection and compilation for the Farming for the Future program. Demonstrating methodologies and tools for collecting, compiling, and reporting farm-scale natural capital data, supporting producers in evolving their farm businesses to maintain and enhance natural capital
  • Biosecurity and Disaster Preparedness: Local Land Services (LLS) provided guidance on planning, preparing for, responding to, and recovering from biosecurity emergencies and natural disasters.
  • Role of the Rural Fire Service (RFS): We Learnt about the role of the Rural Fire Service as the lead combat agency for bushfires in NSW, including comprehensive risk management programs and collaborations with other agencies to respond to and reduce the likelihood and consequences of fires.
  • Get out on Farm with other Graziers: Engage with fellow graziers during paddock walks and discussions, exchanging ideas, strategies, and experiences to enhance your farm management practices.

The impact

The workshops offered farmers the opportunity to engage with their peers during paddock walks and discussions, exchanging ideas, strategies, and experiences to enhance their farm management practices and preparedness for natural disasters.  It provided tools for them to be able to plan, prepare and manage their farm business in an ever-changing climate, providing new resources and contacts with industry professionals to be 'disaster ready'.
