The issue

Landholders in the Boorowa region have been on the front foot with on farm regeneration for many years. We felt there was a need to educate further on the very first steps to regeneration which are plant identification, seed harvesting and propagation. Steps which are usually carried out by professionals.

The solution

The workshop hosted 3 key speakers. First to speak was Alison Elvin who covered the fundamentals on plant identification. It is such a complex topic and her discussion was fascinating. She had many clipping of trees, shrubs and grasses which she talked to in length.

Our second speaker was Tom Deery from Wyola Native Seeds. Tom covered demonstrations of seed harvesting, and the process involved using some native eucalypts as examples. He demonstrated the processes and equipment used and spoke to some of the regulations around seed harvesting as well.

Our final speaker was Kath McGuirk who has been managing the Yass Landcare nursery with a small team of volunteers for the last 6 years. Kath demonstrated the process of propagation and had everyone attempt their own small tray of seedings. Participants were then able to take these home to grow and eventually plant at their place.

The impact

The conclusion of the day had participants wanting more time with all our speakers. They left with a greater understanding of the processes and knowledge required to grow tubestock for regeneration.
