The issue

One of Brunswick Valley Landcare’s volunteer locality groups have been working to regenerate a suburban reserve in Ocean Shores for 15 years.  They have wanted to upgrade the walking track through the reserve for all weather access for a long time, to improve access and increase awareness of the community to this underutilised green space.

The solution

Brunswick Valley Landcare applied for a National Landcare Program Environmental Small Grant and were successful in receiving funding to undertake the work to upgrade the walking track.

As well as the work to upgrade the walking track, 3 community days were held to help promote the reserve to local residents – many of whom have no idea that it exists.  A tree planting, rainforest ID and a bird walk were held and promoted throughout the community with good attendance at all events.

The project was supported by Byron Shire Council through it's Bush Regeneration team.

The impact

This project has been very rewarding as we were able to support a very active and well established group with something they have wanted for a long time.
The community turned up to the events and were all very impressed with the work the group has done and there were many comments of "I had no idea this was here!"

This project has been supported by funding from the Australian Governments National Landcare Program.
