Revegetating Streams in the Brunswick Catchment

A booklet to guide species selection for riparian plantings

Collaborations - LEP_23 _033_LLC_BVL_04

The issue

With the health of our rivers and streams in stark focus following the floods of 2022 and a number of current and upcoming riparian restoration projects Brunswick Valley Landcare BVL and Byron Shire Council felt that a new updated list of suitable species to plant in the Brunswick Catchment was needed to assist practitioners and landholders choose the right species to plant.

The solution

Through joint funding from Bryon Shire Council and BVL funds we updated and revised the original “Revegetating Streams of the Brunswick Catchment” authored by A. Raine, J. Golding, J Gardiner (1997).

The species list revisions and expansions are informed by ground-truthed surveys undertaken by local ecologists over the previous two decades. Revegetation outcomes will be enhanced by a greater diversity of species planted. The almost trebled number of species listed are offered as a guide to give landholders choice, subject to local availability.

This simple booklet includes updated planting lists for upper, middle and lower banks in the Brunswick River Catchment, together with illustrated planting guidelines. The updated guide has a particular focus on flood and drought resilient species and is a companion to existing planting guides developed for the region: Climate Resilient Landscapes and My Native Garden.

The guide was printed through funding obtained by Byron Shire Council from NSW Government - The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.

Local Land Serivces's Riverbank Rehabilitation Project were working on a number of properties in the Brunswick Catchment so in collaboration they funded a workshop to promote the booklet and provide some in the field learning with experts.

The impact

This project was a true collaboration between Landcare, local government and state government and has created and enduing resource that is available for free to anyone that is interesting in regenerating their creeks.
