The issue

With the challenges of drought, fire, flood and other natural disaster events including hail storms facing the Parkes and Forbes Shires over the past five years, and additionally, facing the complexities and limitations of the COVID-19 outbreak, our communities in the Central West saw the need for increased awareness of the options for prevention and mitigation or natural disasters.

Given the importance of the topic of disaster preparedness, we looked at opportunities to engage a well known personality to bring the community together to learn about the options for preparedness with the support of our emergency services.

The solution

Landcare NSW’s People Led Prevention project empowers communities across regional NSW in developing disaster resilience and preparedness skills. The Disaster Risk Reduction Fund is jointly funded by the Australian and NSW Governments.

Central West Lachlan Landcare and Forbes Riverside Community Garden welcomed horticulturist and gardening presenter Graham Ross AM to Forbes, drawing a wonderful crowd on a fresh and sunny autumn morning to hear about disaster preparedness for gardens and properties. The morning kicked off with a delicious breakfast provided by the Forbes Community Riverside Garden. We thank them for giving up their time to provide this important information to our workshop attendees. We were so thrilled to be able to consolidate our emergency service providers into one space to provide information to the community, planning options and increase disaster resilience and community connectivity.

The impact

Graham Ross AM, who is no stranger to many of us who have watched Better Homes & Gardens TV show, shared his gardening knowledge with attendees and answered questions galore.

Rocky Walshaw from Forbes SES and David Hodges from Parkes RFS provided information on emergency preparedness and provided practical solutions and preventative measures to prepare for extreme weather conditions.

The Disaster Risk Reduction Fund is jointly funded by the Australian and NSW Governments. 60 attendees then enjoyed presentations from the Forbes SES and Parkes RFS.
