Capacity to Deliver - LP002-003
The issue
Central West Lachlan Landcare has delivered Schools Eco Day over many years at the Central West Livestock Exchange.
This fabulous, educational day was open to Stage 3 representatives from Parkes and Forbes Shire Schools and Eugowra Schools. Due to cost and the wonderful facility we were utilising, we could only host approximately 100 children.
Expanding Eco Day is something that we have worked towards for several years, after many requests from schools to make this day accessible to more students.
It takes a lot of effort, finances and volunteer power to run a day like this and it was obvious that we needed to find a way to make it more accessible.
The solution
Our Coordinator applied for grants and sourced a new venue to make this day possible. It was decided to make the revised Landcare Schools Eco Day accessible to all Year 5 students in the Parkes and Forbes Shires...and our friends at Eugowra.
We knew that this would include approximately 350 children. We had originally hoped to host the day in 2020, but took what we were dealt with COVID19 and commenced planning for 28 May 2021 at the Forbes Showground, with our special guest Costa Georgiadis.
The day was supported by brilliant workshop presenters covering eco art, Wirradjuri Culture, water, birds, mining, water bugs, recycling, worm farms, FishCare and seed balls.
The impact
We held a fantastic, encouraging day hosting over 350 children from 11 Parkes and Forbes Shire Schools.
The morning workshop sessions were engaging and educational promoting environmental understanding and care that related back to our local area.
We received wonderful feedback from the schools and are looking forward to planning our next event in 2022.
Engaging Costa Georgiadis as our afternoon speaker was a fabulous choice. He was generous with his time, engaging and encouraging with the children and left everyone abuzz with excitement.
