National Tree Day Events Popular in Forbes and Parkes

CWLL run National Tree Day events in Forbes and Parkes on the last Saturday and Sunday of July each year.

The issue

Both Parkes and Forbes Councils have spaces within their Shires that are flagged for planting extensions. Most of these spaces are connected to existing stands of local habitat.

The opportunity to engage with the community and continue to extend our local habitat provide an opportunity to invite community members into spaces that are not always accessible, but still crucial to the continuity of our native landscape.

The solution

National Tree Day provides a designated weekend for the community to join together and plant!

This day has been running for many years in both Shires and has now built a reputation for being a fun, interactive experience where there are environmental and social benefits for attendees.

As well as establishing a living and growing project for the community to enjoy into the future, the social benefits of National Tree Day are some of the unseen benefits that endure beyond the day itself.

The impact

Over 550 plants were established over the two planting days in Forbes and Parkes, engaging over 70 volunteers at both sites.

After planting and mulching was completed at both sites, reflection time on the event with a sausage sanger was welcome.

Our focus is working together as a community and increasing habitat and connectivity for local fauna. Both sites were perfectly positioned for this goal.

Learnings

Planting on National Tree Day brings together the community to work on a project that has long term benefits for the environment and people.
