The issue

The primary issue identified was the need to improve on-farm biodiversity to enhance ecosystem resilience, mitigate climate change, and improve soil health. Farms play a critical role in our landscapes, and there was a need to raise awareness and support for private land conservation across the state.

The solution

Condobolin & Districts Landcare hosted a workshop on 'Improving On-Farm Biodiversity,' funded by the NSW Biodiversity Conservation (BCT) Trust in partnership with Landcare NSW. Experts Josh Frappell from the Regenerative in Mudgee NSW, and Erika Roper from NSW BCT shared their knowledge on enhancing soil health, biodiversity, and effective farm management strategies. They highlighted the importance of water retention, micro water cycles, paddock trees, and native pastures. The BCT outlined biodiversity conservation opportunities for private landholders, managing over 2 million hectares to support local flora and fauna.

The impact

The workshop successfully promoted awareness and support for private land conservation. Participants learned valuable strategies to enhance biodiversity and productivity on their farms. The event fostered a sense of community and collaboration, encouraging ongoing engagement in conservation efforts. This initiative is crucial for ecosystem resilience, climate change mitigation, and soil health improvement.

Learnings

What worked: The collaboration between Condobolin & Districts Landcare, Landcare NSW, and the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust, along with the expertise of Josh Frappell and Erika Roper, was highly effective in educating and engaging participants. What didn't: There might have been challenges in reaching a broader audience or ensuring ongoing participation in biodiversity improvement efforts.
