The issue

For many years, people have been throwing rubbish out of their car windows, dropping rubbish on the ground, or illegally dumping rubbish. This rubbish is destroying our beautiful landscapes and roadsides by polluting the waterways and soil. Coolamon is home to the Kindra Forest which provides habitat for a large population of native flora and fauna, including a small number of native orchids. Coolamon Landcare Group care deeply about the Forest, and work hard to look after it. Unfortunately, illegally dumped rubbish in the forest is impacting the natural surroundings. The group were keen to protect the orchid sites, and reduce contamination from the rubbish dumped in the areas in which they grow.

The solution

On the 6th of March 2022, Coolamon Landcare hosted a Clean up Australia Day event to help fix this issue.

Coolamon Shire Council were invited to take part, and assisted on the day and came by removing the rubbish that the group collected from the forest.

For the event, we had 13 local people come and help clean up the roadsides along Lewis St North, Rannock Rd, and Campbell’s Lane from 9 am to 11 am. All the rubbish picked up was taken to the tip and disposed of in an appropriate manner. Afterwards, the participants were rewarded with a BBQ for their great efforts.

The impact

This event had a positive impact on the environment as a lot of rubbish was picked up and the land was restored back to a more natural state. The community was also positively impacted as the event had new members of the community getting involved with Coolamon Landcare and making a difference together. A video was also created to make the general public aware of the issue in Coolamon. The message that was spread through the video was that by simply picking up and disposing of your waste in the correct way, you will positively impact the community and the environment you live in. The video was posted on Facebook and sent to the Clean up Australia Day group.
