Alternative Agriculture Workshop

Success Stories from Rural Entrepreneurs

- LEP23-005_LLC

The issue

The workshop was designed to empower rurally located people to consider establishing their own Agri side-business ventures by being inspired by and learning from local emerging and established businesses.

The challenges of operating a farming business and raising families in rural and remote regions often means the home-maker and primary caregiver is required to make career compromises. However advancements in technology, communication and social media has meant opportunities for those with a desire to create their own rural small business.

The solution

We heard from 5 guest speakers who have established their own business in the rural landscape along side traditional agriculture.  Themes of business types included: Rural Tourism, Aquaculture, Horticulture and Floriculture.

Guest Speakers were:

Pip Goldsmith, GILMOOMA (Agri Tourism)

Rick Cunningham, Narrabri Fish Farm (Aquaculture)

Elyse Church, Take Your Pet (Tourism)

Jenny Holcombe, Linwood Trees (Horticulture)

Emily Cain, Petal & Bow (Floriculture)

Each presenter shared their story of establishing their business, what inspired them to start, the highs and lows of their journey and what keeps them going. PASSION being the primary motivator!

The impact

The workshop was an effective way to collaborate with our LLS network to work together to share experiences and recourses to inspire and support local residents who may be inspired to start their own business or side hustle or learn about some of the exciting businesses already operating in our region.
The day consisted of a series of guest speaker presentations including interactive and engaging Q&A, mingling over morning tea and lunch and opportunity for mini-market stalls showcasing the business' offering.

Learnings

It was an opportunity for the guest speakers to showcase their businesses, share their experiences with the audience and offer support and networking opportunities to anyone who may be contemplating starting their own small business or rural side hustle.
