Creative Connections
A Women's Health and Wellbeing Art Day in Coonamble
Capacity building - LP003-010
The issue
Women in rural communities like Coonamble often put everyone else first, juggling family, farm work and volunteering with little time left for their own wellbeing. Distance, drought and financial pressure add to the load, and isolation can easily creep in. Our challenge was to create a relaxed, welcoming space where women could step away from their responsibilities, try something creative and reconnect with each other and themselves.
The solution
Coonamble-Castlereagh Landcare hosted a women's health and wellbeing day with painting and drawing workshops led by instructors. Sessions suited all skill levels, and all materials were provided so anyone could join in. We shared a meal together, which gave everyone time to talk, share stories and get to know one another. Each woman went home with her own artwork and new connections in her community.
The impact
The day gave women a rare chance to slow down, be creative and spend time in good company. Many met new people or reconnected with neighbours they seldom see, and the shared meal and storytelling built a real sense of belonging. Participants left feeling relaxed and valued, and proud of the artworks they'd made. Connections like these strengthen the health and resilience of our whole community.
