The issue

We were approached by many different community members and community groups regarding the Mental Health of our farmers but particularly our male farmers. Many people were concerned that many of our previous workshop were more attractive to women then men and that they should have a social day just for them. We had held technical information sessions in regards to feeding stock but never a social day just for the blokes. That is how the Leather and Meat smoking day started.

The solution

We approached a few of our local champions who were well know in the leather making area and meat smoking area, and they were more than happy to facilitate the day. We partnered with Outback Arts Coonamble And the Department of Primary Industries Rural Resiliance Program. We organised a day just for men to learn the skills of leather making and meat smoking. The Participants were able to make and take home a leather Belt as well as learn the art of meat smoking down to how to make your own smoker at home.

The impact

The participants made a belt that they were able to take home. They also were able to learn all about the different types of spice rubs and what spices to use with what meats and so on. At the end of the day the participants enjoyed the fruits of their labour. The participants also took home a recipe book containing the recipes they made on the day and some they could make at home. They also learnt how to make a meat smoker from scratch using things at home, this is a great tool to have as it creates outlets for farmers. The day was a great success and it gave the men a chance to get off the farm and enjoy a social relaxing day with other men.
