Making Livestock Decisions Easier

Recognising the ongoing drought conditions in our regions, and the support that producers are seeking, Central West Local Land Services and local Landcare organisations are working together to bring a series of practical Livestock Decision Making workshops to the Central West. The focus of the workshops will be to provide practical tools for planning the coming months - and beyond - with respect to livestock; feeding versus selling, including cashflow; feed and water budgets; and setting clear trigger points for making tough decisions.

The issue

We've run numerous Drought Smokos and Information days over the last couple of months, with a fantastic response, but as this drought continues producers are still seeking information about nutrition and feeding. Many need help making some pretty tough decisions about their stock, and more guidance to be able to make them.

We've seen that many producers who normally can make rational decisions about their livestock are really struggling. These workshops have been organised in response to the decision making paralysis that support staff are seeing in landholders they are dealing with everyday.

The solution

Workshop presenter Alistair Rayner from RaynerAg is highly-regarded and very practical. Participants come away with many practical skills to be able to re-evaluate livestock feed and nutrition demands, and their cashflow. This will help producers to set plans in place and feel in control going forward."
The workshops were delivered in nine locations across the Central West throughout August, including Dubbo, Coonabarabran and Coonamble. They provided an excellent opportunity for producers to take away practical tools to help livestock decision making a little easier.

The impact

These workshops were  a great opportunity to get practical guidance and information, to set plans in place and to help producers to feel in control. Being in control is vital for farmers at the moment. They may not have Control of the weather but having control on decision they make because of it can be game changer.
