The issue

The physical factors of texture, structure, water and temperature along with the soil reaction, acidity, alkalinity, salinity and sodicity, changes in status of soil nutrients affect soil health and quality. These factors play a vital role in the productivity of soil.

The solution

Increase organic matter inputs.

As organic matter such as manure and compost decays into humus, it improves soil structure and drainage, holds moisture, and provides nutrients to the soil. Perennial, grass-dominant pastures are effective in increasing organic matter.

The impact

It is proposed that soil health is dependent on the maintenance of four major functions: carbon transformations; nutrient cycles; soil structure maintenance; and the regulation of pests and diseases.

Key facts

  • The heart of the project is soil sampling / testing, with skilled soils professionals providing interpretation of results (“What the numbers mean”), and workshops centred around soil pits with delivery of soils management advice to landholders and advisors.
