Our new Shade Tunnel at Dandarrga Native Nursery

Polytunnel shadehouse

In the winter months of 2018 we built a new shade tunnel, using polypipe and star pickets.

The project was a team effort by Dandarrga Landcare volunteers, and guided by Barry Hicks.

Polytunnel construction is also a cheap and easy method for building an enclosed area for gardens, orchards and poultry runs. We wanted to share our experience.

The materials - the pickets, pipe and shade cloth. and the video camera and laptop we used to produce this short video, were funded by the Wettenhall Environment Trust Small Environmental Grant Scheme.

This summer, the shade tunnel is almost full of rainforest trees, shrubs and native grasses.

Dorrigo Hakea seedlings

Some of these species will be used to regenerate the local waterways and create wildlife habitat on the Dorrigo Plateau in coming years. Others will provide habitat in the Bellinger Valley. All of these plants have been grown using locally collected seed.
