The issue

The lag between research and adoption of new technology relating to pasture, soils and animal management practises is well recognised throughout the grazing industry in Australia. GLENRAC hosted the Pasture Update in an effort to connect land managers with current research including the effective use of phosphorus fertilizers in grazing systems; the use of drones as a monitoring tool, particularly for weeds monitoring; persistence of legumes in pastures and recent survey work on legume nodulation.

The solution

The Pasture Update was a collaborative one-day event involving seven partner organisations. The event had a steering committee representative of the partner organisations and local producers. Funding for the event was provided both in financial and in-kind contributions from partners organisations. The major event partner was the Grassland Society of NSW Inc. and Meat & Livestock Australia. Event participants were required to make a financial contribution through a $20 registration fee.

The impact

The Pasture Update was attended by 127 participants, including farmers, students and interested community members. The event provided a local, interactive opportunity for participants to engage with members of the research community and to network with other participants.  Positive feedback was received from event participants. In response to interest generated from this event GLENRAC has since hosted two ‘Discover Drones’ workshop in June 2017.
