The issue
Communities across the Glen Innes region continue to experience limited and unreliable mobile and internet connectivity. For many residents and landholders, poor connectivity creates barriers to accessing essential services such as telehealth, emergency communication and online information. It can also impact day-to-day operations, safety and decision-making on farm.
In addition, navigating available service options or troubleshooting issues can be confusing, particularly where independent advice is limited. These local challenges reflect a broader digital divide affecting rural communities across Australia.
The solution
With support from the Regional Tech Hub, GLENRAC delivered a “Connectivity for the Community” workshop series during March 2026 across three locations—Glen Innes, Wellingrove and Deepwater.
These free, community-based sessions focused on practical support, providing participants with:
- Clear information about available mobile and internet options
- Guidance on how to troubleshoot common connectivity issues
- Advice on what to ask service providers
- Access to independent, reliable information through the Regional Tech Hub
- A session on identity security and how to reduce the risk of scams
Events were promoted through local communication channels and delivered in accessible, familiar settings, with morning tea provided to encourage attendance and discussion.
The impact
The workshops helped participants build practical knowledge and confidence in managing their connectivity challenges. Participants gained a clearer understanding of the range of mobile and internet options available and where to access independent advice. They were also better equipped to approach service providers with the right questions and to take steps to improve their online safety.
The sessions created an opportunity for community members to share their experiences, which highlighted common challenges across the region and reinforced that these issues are widely experienced. This shared understanding supported more informed decision-making and helped participants feel more confident navigating their connectivity options.
