The issue

Rural landholders and communities in the Glen Innes region face significant challenges in managing natural resources, sustaining productive landscapes, and maintaining strong, connected communities. Drought, environmental degradation, and limited access to training, support, and funding have historically constrained local capacity, making it difficult to achieve both ecological and social outcomes. Without coordinated action, these pressures threaten the long-term health of the land and the resilience of the community.

The solution

GLENRAC addresses these challenges by providing strategic guidance, programs, and partnerships that empower landholders and residents to sustainably manage resources and strengthen community wellbeing. Every five years, the elected GLENRAC Committee of Management undertakes a strategic planning workshop to shape the organisation’s direction for the next planning period. The committee aligns on the vision, mission, and organisational priorities, which then inform the goals, strategies, and actions delivered by staff each year. This process provides a clear checkpoint to ensure GLENRAC remains focused on its intended purpose. It also guides the funding we pursue and the partnerships we develop, ensuring our work continues to support our community and surrounding landscape effectively.

In 2020, the GLENRAC committee set out to create solutions for a sustainable and productive landscape. Its mission is to initiate and coordinate action for landholders and the community to manage and maintain the natural resource base of the Glen Innes region for the improvement of both the social and productive environment. The organisation established four key priorities: Strong People for a Strong Community, Sustaining Land, Achieving Balance, and GLENRAC 2050, guiding strategic decisions and ensuring meaningful, long-term community outcomes. These priorities provide a clear framework that shapes programs, informs partnerships, and supports effective resource management across the region today.

The impact

Following the 2019 drought, a surge of funding supported rural communities, and GLENRAC served as an effective conduit for the Glen Innes region. Key achievements from 2020–2025 include major community and business awards; delivering 411 events for 9,563 participants; providing 27 training courses valued at $88,522; securing 74 of 195 grant applications worth $3,142,564; engaging 387 farms in on-ground works; planting 90,400 trees across 356 hectares; undertaking weed control on more than 53,000 hectares; and installing 140 nest boxes. These outcomes demonstrate strong community engagement, environmental stewardship, and strengthening regional resilience through inclusive and collaborative efforts across communities.
