Habitat Boxes for fire effected Landscapes

Local wildlife benefit from nesting boxes constructed and installed in Tenterfield's Bush fire effect habitats.

Community Participation - LP007-004

The issue

This project was developed to bring positive environmental outcomes to the local fauna that is particularly reliant on hollows for shelter and breeding. These hollows became a highly limited resource in Tenterfield and the surrounding area due to the devastating bush fires in 2019 and 2020 that The Tenterfield area was severely impacted upon by the 2019 / 20 bush fires that burnt 237,213 Ha which is 32% of the total LGA. decimated thousands of hectares of native vegetation. We wanted to bring the community (individuals, community groups and schools) together to share resources, skills and knowledge to increase habitat for our fauna and begin to understand how to engineer ecosystem hollows for the future.

The solution

Granite Borders Landcare received funding through the Communities environmental program to build and distribute nesting boxes into fire effected areas in the Tenterfield Shire. A short film was also made to highlight the need for the boxes in the environment particularly after the major bush fires experienced. This film also explained how to install and monitor the boxes. The film was used for school visit and as a general education tool.

The impact

This project deliver positive environmental outcomes to Australia’s fauna with 90 nesting boxes constructed and put up on 42 properties covering 12,681 Ha in the Tenterfield Bush fire effect habitats.
Tenterfield Pre-school and St Joesph's Primary school also received a nest box each and a information talk on the importance of protecting and conserving habitat.
A information film was made instead of holding a workshop due to Covid-19 restrictions that where in place at the time. This film was aired on ABC Landline and distributed through social media by Granite Borders Landcare, Northern Tableland Local Land Services and NSW Landcare.
