The issue

Riparian weeds are a problem along waterways in the catchments of the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. These weeds are often in relatively remote locations and the current Landcare groups controlling them are in need of further volunteer support.

Succession planning is an issue in the Landcare movement, with the majority of volunteers being of retirement age. Young people care about the environment and want to get involved with on-ground opportunities where they can contribute, but often they don't know how to get involved.

The solution

Central Tablelands Local Land Services approached Greater Sydney Landcare Network to help recruit adventerous volunteers to help restore rivers in the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. Central Tablelands LLS has secured funding for their Living on the Edge project, through which, they are partnering with local Landcare groups to remove problem weeds in their area.

Greater Sydney Landcare Network is delivering a Get Your Hands Dirty program to engage young adults in Landcare and Bushcare volunteering. They linked up this project with Living on the Edge to recruit young, adventerous volunteers to help restore riparian bushland in the Blue Mountains.

The impact

Greater Sydney Landcare Network in partnership with Central Tablelands LLS have delivered two Living on the Edge events to help restore riparian ecosystems in the Blue Moutains World Heritage Area. These events were in collaboration with local groups, Friends of the Colo and Capertee Valley Landcare.

Through these events, 16 volunteers removed problem woody weeds along the Capertee and Wolgan Rivers. Each event also included fun activities to reward volunteers and incentivise them to get involved, including camping and bushwalks through the local area.

Central Tablelands is producing a short video story from the most recent Wolgan Valley event.
