The issue

It has been identified that Chilean Needle Grass is becoming an issue in some areas of the Inverell District. Knowledge of the weed is not as widespread!

The solution

Gwymac organised a workshop at the Inverell Club on Friday 10 May. Jeff Lowein, agronomist from the Northern Tableland Local Land Services and Geoff Riley, weeds officer from the Inverell Shire Council presented on how to control this invasive weed. The workshop went for approximately two hours and was incredibly informative, it also provided participants with the opportunity to meet our central weeds personnel. Participants were further enticed to the workshop via the prospect of tasty beers afterwards at the Club!

The impact

Participants were taught about:

  • The history and biology of Chilean Needle Grass;
  • Trial work
  • Different approaches to controlling Chilean Needle Grass;
  • Utilisation;
  • Chilean Needle Grass attributes; and
  • Identification.

A majority of participants recorded that their knowledge of Chilean Needle Grass control methods had increased following the workshop.
