BCT Seed Collection and Propagation Workshop

An introduction to seed collection and propagation techniques

Capacity to Deliver - LEP-028-001

The issue

The primary issue identified was the lack of knowledge, confidence and skills of Landcarers to successfully collect and propagate seeds on their properties to conserve endemic species. Seed collection and propagation techniques are an integral part of successful and sustainable land management, and there was a need to address this issue in the Upper Hunter.

The solution

Hunter Region Landcare Network hosted a workshop ‘Seed Collection and Propagation Techniques’ funded by the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust (BCT) in partnership with Landcare NSW, and Muswellbrook Council.  Hunter Region Landcare Network Upper Hunter Coordinator Paul Melehan imparted knowledge on seed collection and propagation techniques to enhance and sustain biodiversity on properties of private landholders. This educational workshop was delivered by employing a multitude of teaching techniques to support all learning types. The day included an informative PowerPoint presentation, hands on demonstrations of seed propagation techniques, culminating in full attendee participation and a walk and talk seed collection at a local site.  Regional Officer for the Biodiversity Conservation Trust Rhys Corrigan informed the participants of biodiversity conservation opportunities for private landholders.

The impact

This workshop equipped participants with the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to successfully propagate and collect an array of seeds. This knowledge is essential to the ongoing preservation of lands and future restoration of degraded ecosystems. Awareness was raised of the opportunities on offer from the Biodiversity Conservation Trust, informing landholders of the various options for land management. The workshop encouraged participants to share and learn from each other, and enabled them to make connections, networks and new friendships.

Learnings

Thanks to the efforts of Hunter Region Landcare Network, Biodiversity Conservation Trust and Muswellbrook Shire Council, participants successfully engaged in the range of activities available on the day that expanded their knowledge and skills in seed collection and propagation techniques.
