Year 8 students explore Yass Gorge

Eighteen Year 8 High School students explore Gorge and later draw and model it. Report by Ryl Parker

On 25 October, I had the privilege of accompanying eighteen Year 8 student from the Yass Public High School who attended a bird walk at the Yass Gorge. The walk was led by Nicki Taws from Greening Australia who is well known and highly respected for her bird identification and training skills. We were also fortunate enough to have Aaron Chatfield (also from Greening Australia) who shared his knowledge of the Aboriginal indigenous uses for the native plants local to the area.

During the walk we saw many native flora and fauna, which the students later represented through drawings and playdough sculptures. The artwork was displayed at the Yass Library for one week.

A photo competition was also held. Once we surpassed the challenge of figuring out who took which photo (imagine 18 eager students sharing six digital cameras between them) the best photos were selected for display in the library.
