Lamb Survival and Shelterbelts

Bringing primary producers together to learn about the benefits of shelterbelts for young lambs

Capacity building - LEP_23-035_LLC_001

The issue

Cold weather is an important factor in lamb mortality and research is demonstrating that well placed shelterbelts can help reduce lamb mortality.

The solution

Landcare NSW and the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust are working together to raise awareness and support private land conservation efforts across the state.

Lithgow Oberon Landcare facilitated a workshop in conjunction with the BCT, Gordon Refshauge of the DPIRD and Bruce Watt from the Central Tablelands Local Land Services, to discuss with landholders impacts of palatable and non-palatable shelterbelts, as well as impacts of shrubs and crop coverage on livestock health.

The impact

Landholders found the information useful for their enterprises. They also showed interest in future workshops on shelterbelt design, feral pig control and erosion control workshops.
