The issue
Creating volunteering opportunities of interest for young adults, under 40, is a challenge for most Landcare regions. Combined with an overall reduction in volunteering numbers, this is an issue that could affect the ability for regions to self-sustain into the future.
The solution
Collaborating with existing events creates exciting volunteering opportunities for young adults whilst increasing Landcare's profile and delivering positive environmental outcomes.
These collaborations additionally allow for the formation of new mutually beneficial relationships with event organisers and landowners.
The impact
Over the past 12 months, MidCoast2Tops Landcare Connection has collaborated with several events;
Subsonic Music Festival; a team of 7 volunteers and 2 local coordinators attended this festival to raise Landcare's profile, improve attendees' understanding of platypus conservation, and through the efforts of event attendees over 500 trees were planted to further on-site riparian restoration works and support platypus habitat.
Neo Music Festival; a team of 5 volunteers and 2 local coordinators attended this festival to raise Landcare's profile, improve attendees' understanding and appreciation of Australian rainforests, and through the efforts of event attendees over 200 trees were planted to further on-site critically endangered Lowland Subtropical Rainforest restoration works.
ExplorerFest; a team of 9 volunteers and 2 local coordinators attended this festival to raise Landcare's profile, improve attendees' understanding of threatened shorebird conservation issues, and through the efforts of event attendees over 180 trees were planted to support improving bird habitat on-site.
With over 85% of event attendees surveyed being unaware of Landcare these collaborations also provided a valuable opportunity to answer the question "What is Landcare?".
