The issue

A group of locals in Cowra had been undertaking weed control and tidying up a small section of Billygoat Hill behind their houses. They felt that they would like to promote further works on the Hill and be able to discuss potential projects and funding opportunites with Cowra Council.

The group wanted the opportunity to align with Council and other Community Groups to Revegetate, restore, enhance, and maintain Bellevue/Billygoat Hill to improve ecological function of the existing Box Gum Grassy Woodland plant community.

The solution

They approached Mid Lachlan Landcare (MLL) to see how we might be able to assist them. Together we have worked to create the Billygoat Hill Appreciation Society, a new group who have auspiced with MLL to reduce admin and costs so they can focus on what they formed to do.

We are working together and recently the first AGM was held for the group and there have also been some meetings held with council to share ideas and look at ways to work together in the future.

An action plan was created with input from all members of the group and it has been given to Council and the local LLS branch.

The impact

At this stage the group have not yet been able to undertake any significant on-ground works as Council is working through site protocols and procedures.

It is important though that the group has been formed and they are developing local relationships with Council and have projects on the shelf ready to go. One member has also been employed by Council to undertake woody weed control a few hours a week with before and after photo's. This has already made a huge difference in an area that is difficult to access.

MLL looks forward to continue working with this passionate group of locals.
